CONVERSATION PIECE!
Hamish Lowe sent me this interesting list of band and their start up dates:
I dont know if this is of any interest to you, but I was always under the impression that Wallacestone Pipe Band was the oldest civilian pipe band in the world, being formed in 1887.
I notice that the City of Brechin Pipe Band can trace their origins back to a band formed in1884 although not continiously present as a band since that date.
A trawl of the internet found the following civillian bands still in existence:
Accrington Pipe Band ( England) formed 1885
Wallacestone Pipe Band formed 1887
Eastbourne Scottish Pipe Band ( England) formed 1888
City of Invercargill Pipe Band ( New Zealand) formed 1893
Royal Caledonian Society of South Africa formed 1894
Sons of Scotland Pipe Band (Ottawa) formed 1896
City of South Perth ( Australia) formed 1898
City of Dunedin ( New Zealand) formed 1898
Langholm Pipe Band (borders) historians claim that their pipe band was formed there in 1874 but there is no documentory proof of this and they also claim the oldest Brass Band in the world as well.
The oldest non army pipe band appears to be the Govan Police band formed by Act of Parliament in 1883

This site is the news vehicle of The Practical Pipers Society, based in Carnoustie, Scotland.
During the time that the site has been running, it has become a venue of interest for Pipers and Drummers not only from around the Dundee, Perth and Angus area, but from much farther afield. We now have input from Canada, Australia and more recently, Hong Kong.
For this reason I have included photos of people, bands, old and new from around the Dundee, Perth and Angus area, and have even been able to link in with locals who have travelled far and wide.
If you can help to identify people and place, simply sit down and have a go. You will find your ammunition in the "Archives and Photos".
PLEASE CHECK OUT THE INDEX OF BANDS IN THE SAME AREA, AS THERE ARE 48 (Yes .. Forty-eight) BANDS ALL NEEDING TO HAVE THEIR DETAILS MADE KNOWN ! ! ! !

Follow the (mis)adventures of "Wullie Reed" who was born through the fun watching one of our new members going through the growing pains of learning. His nick name was Wullie Reed as he was forever being accused of shaving them. "Being found out with regularity!"
Here is "Wullie" so click on him to go to his page.
