The City of Brechin Pipe Band

A BRIEF HISTORY
The earliest record of any official connection between Brechin Town Council and bagpipe music is contained in the minutes of the magistrates on 20th June 1688 appointing John Wyslie to the post of Town Piper.
The earliest record of a pipe band in Brechin is the formation in 1884 of a band to lead the local volunteer detachment, this band also took part in various local ceremonies related to the funeral of Queen Victoria and the welcome home to local men who served in the Boer war.

Brechin Town Council drew up the pipe bands current constitution in October 1950 naming the band `The City of Brechin pipe band' this is the constitution the band continues to use today, including service to the ancient office of `Town Piper' by the Pipe Major who maintains and plays the Town bagpipes.

In 1998 the band was successful in securing the World and European Pipe Band Championships in Grade 4B as well as Champion of Champions, gaining promotion to Grade 4A in 1999.

A RECENT HISTORY
Recently the band has had continued success in competition securing a 4th place at the European Championships in Belgium in 2003 and a 6th in the Scottish Championships in 2004.
As a result of the demand to have a memento of the band playing at the many events that it attends throughout the year, by members of the public, both locally and overseas. In April 2004 the band took the final steps in the production of a music compact disc, titled
`A Lang Time Comin'.

The band recently offered its services to a local radio charity `Caring for Kids' charity auction. Securing generous bids with the eventual winner gaining the use of the band at his wedding in July 2005.

Pipe Major Craig Black Meeting Her Majesty the Queen
The highlight of 2004 for the band was being asked, by the Provost of Angus Mr Bill Middleton, to provide musical accompaniment for her Majesty the Queen on her visit to Angus. Entertaining both the Royal Party and gathered crowds in Forfar and Kirriemuir. This resulted in members of the band meeting the Queen and Prince Phillip, receiving their thanks as well as television and newspaper coverage.

THE PEOPLE INVOLVED
The band in it's early days consisted mainly of players from the Brechin area, but in recent times musicians from all over the North East of Scotland have been attracted to the band.
Today's band is made up of players from Brechin, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Edzell, Dundee, Laurencekirk and Stonehaven. These dedicated musicians' travel twice weekly to practices throughout the year in preparation for the busy summer schedule of competitions and engagements.
The band include in our ranks members from varying walks of life, all brought together by the common bond of music. These are people of all ages from 12 to 50 giving the band members an average age of 25.
One of the aims of the band is to encourage the playing of pipes and drums by providing free tuition to both youngsters and adults, ensuring the band has a steady flow of talented players for the future.
As well as playing with the band, members also compete in solo competitions under the band name with a large degree of success.

WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU?
This year over the summer months the band can be seen performing at over 20 events including the World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green, the European Championships at Bainbridge in Northern Ireland, the Glamis transport extravaganza and various highland games and agricultural shows across the Northeast of Scotland.

At these venues spectators from across the world can be found, many of who, have come specifically to see the pipe band. The major pipe band Championships, of which there are 5, typically attract upwards of 30,000 visitors in addition to the 5,000 competing band members.
At these events through sponsoring the band, the possibility exists to promote your company to a large captive audience.
