Comrie Pipe Band


This year 2005 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Comrie Pipe Band.

Right back up to date now, with the band on parade in the Main Street of Comrie.

Comrie Pipe Band was formed in the 1920's. One of the prime movers behind the band was Mr.
Alexander McGregor who headed a Committee which raised funds to provide uniforms for those who
could not buy their own and also to pay for the equipment.
The band played at many functions throughout Perthshire. In 1929 the band was one of eight bands
taking part in the pipe band contest at Comrie Highland Gathering. 155 bandsmen took part with
Comrie Pipe Band having 15 players in Royal Stewart tartan under Pipe Major Thomas Clark.


At some point in time the Comrie Pipe Band folded, and this was the case for a number
of years until the famous Hogmanay "FLAMBEAUX" parade was resurrected in Comrie.
Each year a pipe band would be assembled to lead the parade, the band being made
up of any one who could and wanted to play.
With a band being assembled each year, thoughts turned to reforming the Comrie Pipe
Band and this happened in 1985. At that time the Strathearn Pipe Band based in Crieff
began to be more involved in competitions and several of the more elderly members left
and formed the nucleus of the "new" Comrie band.
The first Pipe Major was David Donaldson Jn , who was followed in turn by Pipe Majors
Peter Lowe, Bob Bolton and currently Sandy Campbell. Hugh Sinclair has been the leading
drummer of the Comrie band during this time. Previously High had been leading drummer
with the Strathearn band for more than 20 years.

The twinning of Comrie with Carleton Place in Canada has resulted in Comrie Pipe Band visiting there in 1994 and 1997. The 42nd Lanark & Renfrew Pipes and Drums from Canada visited Comrie in the summer of 1996, together with the Mayor of Carleton Place and the Mayor of Perth, Lanark County, Ontario.
Anyone interested in joining Comrie Pipe Band at any level of piping or drumming is always welcome.
