This was another famous and busy Piper in and around
Dundee. He was born in Dundee on 14 May 1886.
"Swordie", as he was known, served in the 4th Battalion
Black Watch as a Pipe Major during the First World War.
Following the War, he returned to the 24th Boys Brigade
and continued his teaching. Upon return to civilian life he
rejoined Jute Industries Limited, at Bow Bridge Works,
where in time he became a Mill Manager. In the early 1950
he was one of the founder members of Jute Industries Pipe
Band. He was their Pipe Major until his retirement from the
Band on 31 August 1955.
Elsewhere on the site, you will find a photo of this band.
Swordie also had a long association with the Boys Brigade
and in particular 24th Coy of Dundee B.B. In fact he
taught the pipes to B.B. Bands for over 20years.
