Auchterhouse Nov Juvenile

Here we have a young band which was raised and taught in the village of Auchterhouse

thanks to the hard work of a committee led by George Stewart.

Once they got the basic meeting sorted out they had tuition help from me (Gordon Rogers)

and Richard Smith of the Fintry Pipe Band. Eventually they were assisted in the drumming

side of things by Mike Croft who was taught in Forfar Burgh but moved to Tayside Police.

During 1980/81 the entire band went on two residential teach-ins at Angus House, Edzell

and this led to them having success in the local Branch Championships with a first and

third in the Mini Bands in 1986. In those days we had kilts and jerseys with little else.

With me working shifts and Pipe Major of the Police band, change had to come.

Fred Duncan decided to retire from the Police Pipe Band and was persuaded that

his time could be well used as it would not be divided between two organisations.

Here, in 1990 we see Pipe Major Fred Duncan, with the Blue Banner,

 with this young band in their practice hall, by now fully dressed

and with a really professional look about them

I' really struggling to remember names after all these years but Euan has helped.

Standing on the left with the Bass sticks is Billy (unknown). Fourth in from Billy in the centre row

could be Gavin Pyper, who was also keen on racing cars. Behind Billy is Tonia Whitmore (tenor drummer)

Seated in the centre of the front row is Athol Whitmore.
